    Lee Hsun Lecture Series

Topic: Deformation twinning at the intermediate scale

    Speaker: Prof. Irene J. Beyerlein
                UC Santa Barbara

    Abstract:

At temperatures below those at which individual atoms move by diffusion, slip and twinning are the major deformation modes that enable a metal to change shape under an externally applied strain field. Twinning is especially important in crystals of lower symmetry, for example, hexagonal close packed (HCP) metals, such as Mg, Zr, Ti, and Be, and their alloys. The formation of deformation twins in this class of metals is a multiscale event, and can be divided into nucleation, propagation, and growth stages. In this lecture, we present a series of recent experimental and modeling studies that aim to obtain a physical picture of deformation twinning at intermediate scales, where the structure of groups of defects, crystals, and grain boundaries play a profound role. We will report on findings regarding twin embryo formation, twin lamella thickening and multiplication, and twin transmission across grain boundaries. Some interesting effects of plastic anisotropy in slip and local crystal neighborhoods will be discussed.
